Name label for the water bottle that is dishwasher-safe

A name label on a water bottle should be self-adhesive, placed on a smooth, straight part of the bottle, and dishwasher-safe. Lappu's name labels adhere to plastic, metal, and glass and withstand dishwashing at up to 60 °C, so the same label can handle both the school sink and the gym bag. Apply it to a clean, dry bottle at room temperature and wait 24 hours before washing it for the first time.

Here you can see which size fits which bottle, where on the bottle the label stays put, why the lid also needs a name, and when it is the bottle, not the label, that is not dishwasher-safe.

That's why water bottles go missing

A water bottle goes everywhere: to school, after-school care, soccer practice, and the gym. It is left on a bench, in a window, or in the stands. And it often looks exactly like a friend's, since many people buy the same popular models in the same colors.

Two things happen. The bottle is forgotten and ends up in a lost-and-found box where no one knows who it belongs to. Or someone picks up the wrong bottle with the best intentions. With a clear name on the bottle, a teacher, coach, or friend can immediately see who it belongs to.

Lids and straws are just as likely to go missing. They are unscrewed, washed separately, and left in the dish rack. A bottle without its lid cannot be used, so it is often the lid that needs to find its way home.

Which name label fits which bottle?

Lappu has two sizes that work on bottles. Large name labels (30 labels, SEK 139) are made for items where the name should be visible from a distance, such as water bottles, backpacks, and sports gear. Regular name labels (124 labels, from SEK 139) fit bottles with less surface area and lids.

Bottle Best to use Keep in mind
Children's plastic bottle with straw Large name label on the bottle, regular one on the lid Place the label on the straight section, not on the grip edge
Plastic sports bottle with spout Large name label Avoid ridges and soft squeeze zones
Thermos and insulated steel bottle Large or regular name label Check whether the bottle itself is dishwasher-safe
Aluminum bottle Large name label Clean the surface thoroughly; the label adheres to metal
Glass bottle Regular name label If it has a silicone cover, put the label on the glass, not the cover

A preschool-aged child will often recognize their bottle by its design before they can read. Feel free to choose an animal or color the child has pointed out themselves, but let the name take center stage so adults can read it quickly.

The right place on the bottle

The label stays on longest where it can lie flat and does not rub against anything.

  • In the middle of the bottle's straight section. The surface is smooth there, and the label is visible when the bottle is standing on the counter.
  • Not on the bottom. The bottom scrapes against tables, bags and the dishwasher rack every day.
  • Not over ridges, seams or the edge against the lid. The label cannot conform to an uneven surface, and the edges will start to lift.
  • Not on silicone or rubber. Silicone sleeves, rubber rings and soft straws do not hold a self-adhesive label. Place it on the hard part next to them.
  • A separate label on the lid. A regular name label on the lid's hard plastic part helps the lid find its way back even when it is washed separately.

How to attach the name label

  1. Wash and dry the bottle. The surface must be clean and completely dry, without grease from fingers or residue from dish soap.
  2. Let the bottle reach room temperature. A bottle taken straight from the refrigerator gets a thin layer of condensation. That layer is enough to prevent the adhesive from gripping.
  3. Press the label firmly for about 10 seconds. Start in the middle, then press extra firmly on the corners and edges, where labels most often start to come loose.
  4. Wait 24 hours before washing. The adhesive needs about 24 hours to cure. Do not wash the bottle in the dishwasher before then.

What a name label on a water bottle can withstand

Lappus name labels are dishwasher-safe up to 60 °C. They stick to plastic, metal and glass - the materials that water bottles are almost always made of. Large name labels are described on the product page as water-resistant and designed for daily use on items including water bottles.

Three things to keep in mind:

  • Choose a dishwasher program of no more than 60 °C.
  • The label holds least well on silicone and soft, stretchy materials.
  • The label needs 24 hours to cure before the first wash.

The label is dishwasher-safe, but is the bottle?

Many people miss this. The fact that the name label is dishwasher-safe does not mean that the bottle is. Many insulated steel bottles and thermoses should, according to the manufacturer, be washed by hand.

For example: Thermos writes that hand washing is recommended for its King 0.5 l thermos and that the product is not dishwasher-safe (the manufacturer's care instructions at ICA, read October 3, 2026). Care instructions differ between models, so check your particular bottle.

Rule of thumb: read the bottle's care instructions first. Always follow whichever is stricter: the bottle's instructions or the label's limit of 60 °C. A bottle that should be washed by hand should be washed by hand, with or without a name label.

School, training, and work

At school and in after-school care, the child's first name is usually enough. If there are two children in the class with the same name, you can add the surname or an initial, since all the labels in a set have the same text.

At practice, the bottle lies beside twenty others on the sideline. A large label that can be seen from a distance helps, preferably in a color that differs from the team's. The same applies to adults at the gym or at work, where the bottle is kept in a shared kitchen. Read more about name labels for adults.

For bottles taken on outings, to the mountains, or to the lake, a phone number on the second line may be more useful than the name. Whoever finds the bottle can then get in touch directly.

Name label or bottle with a printed name?

You can also buy a bottle with the name printed directly on it. It looks nice, and the label cannot come off. But the name is then only on one bottle, and when the bottle is lost or becomes too small, you have to start over.

You can put a name label on the bottle the child already has, on the lid, and on the next bottle. From the same set, you can also label the backpack, gym bag, and sports equipment.

How much does it cost per bottle?

Calculation example using Lappus prices in October 2026: a set of large name labels costs SEK 139 for 30 labels, which is about SEK 4.63 per label. Regular name labels cost from SEK 139 for 124 labels, about SEK 1.12 per label.

If you label a bottle with a large label and the lid with a standard one, it costs approximately SEK 5.75. If you have two children who each have a school bottle and a sports bottle, that makes four bottles and four lids, or approximately SEK 23 in labels. The rest of the sets is enough for backpacks, clothing, and shoes. See more examples of what name labels cost per item.

When the label comes off: cause and solution

What happens Likely cause What to do
The label comes off during the first wash The adhesive did not have time to cure Apply a new label and wait 24 hours before washing
The corners lift after a few days The edges were not pressed down, or the surface was greasy Clean the surface, apply a new label, and press the corners firmly
The label does not adhere at all The bottle was cold and damp from condensation Let the bottle reach room temperature and dry it before applying the label
The label wears off It was placed on the bottom or over a ridge Move it to the smooth middle of the bottle
The label does not adhere to the cover Silicone does not hold self-adhesive labels Place it on the bottle's hard surface or on the lid

Frequently asked questions

Is a name label on a water bottle dishwasher-safe?

Yes. Lappus name labels are dishwasher-safe up to 60 °C. Wait approximately 24 hours after applying the label before washing it for the first time, so the adhesive has time to cure.

Where should the name label go on the water bottle?

In the middle of the bottle's straight, smooth section, where it is visible and does not rub against anything. Avoid the bottom, ridges, and the edge near the lid. You can also put a separate label on the lid.

Do name labels work on stainless steel bottles?

Yes, the labels adhere to metal. Clean the surface thoroughly first. Also check the bottle's care instructions, as many insulated steel bottles and thermoses are not dishwasher-safe.

What size should I choose for the water bottle?

Large name labels are most visible and are made, among other things, for water bottles. Standard name labels fit on narrow bottles and on the lid, and the same set also covers clothing and shoes.

Why does the name label come off the bottle?

Usually because the surface was greasy or damp, the label was washed before the adhesive had cured, or it was placed over a ridge. Labels do not adhere well to silicone and rubber.

Can I include a phone number on the name label?

Yes, a phone number fits on a second line. This is useful for bottles brought on outings, training trips, and to work.
