How self-adhesive name labels stick: and why they stay in place

A self-adhesive name label is a printed label with strong adhesive on the back. Peel it off, press it in place, and the garment is labeled. No iron, no needle and thread.

The secret to making them stay in place is where you attach them. On clothes, place the label on the sewn-in care label, not directly on the fabric. Fabric stretches and moves in the wash, so a label placed only on the fabric has to work against that movement. The care label stays still and is often made of a synthetic material that the adhesive bonds firmly to. That is why the label stays securely in place wash after wash.

For hard items such as lunch boxes, water bottles, and shoes, attach the label directly to a clean, smooth surface. Same adhesive, same label - just a different surface.

One label - five surfaces: fabric, plastic, metal, glass, and leather

This is the difference compared with buying several different types of labels. One and the same self-adhesive name label from Lappu sticks to fabric, plastic, metal, glass, and leather. One set is therefore enough for both clothes and the hard items your child takes to preschool, school, or training.

In practice, that means the same purchase covers:

  • Clothes: jackets, trousers, sweaters, and outerwear - on the care label.
  • Shoes and boots: on a smooth, clean surface on the inside.
  • Lunch boxes and water bottles: directly on plastic, metal, or glass.
  • Sports equipment and bags: on smooth, hard surfaces and on the fabric care label of fabric parts.

So you don't have to choose between "labels for clothes" and "labels for belongings". Design a set that covers everything.

How to attach them - three steps

  1. Clean the surface. Make sure the care label or hard surface is clean, dry, and free from dust and grease.
  2. Press firmly. Peel off the backing, place the label, and press hard for a few seconds, especially on the corners.
  3. Wait 24 hours. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before the first wash or dishwashing. Then wash as usual, up to 60°C.

Who are self-adhesive name labels suitable for?

They are suitable for anyone who wants to label many items quickly and without hassle:

  • Preschool and daycare: clothes, shoes, bottles, and lunch boxes that are easily mixed up in the cloakroom.
  • School and after-school care: sportswear, water bottles, and school supplies.
  • Sports and training: equipment, bags, and shoes.
  • Adults and care homes: clothes and personal belongings that need to find their way home again.

If you need to label very small items such as pens and pacifiers, choose small name labels. If something needs to be visible from a distance, large name labels are a better choice.

Withstands washing, drying, and dishwashing

The labels withstand 60°C in the washing machine, tumble dryer, and dishwasher. The text does not fade, provided that the label is attached to the care label and has been left to set for 24 hours. Many parents write that the labels are still attached an entire school year later.

When are self-adhesive labels suitable - and when aren't they?

Self-adhesive name labels are suitable for most store-bought clothes, as they have a sewn-in care label to attach them to. They are also suitable for all hard, smooth items.

There is one case where they adhere less well: fully hand-knitted garments without a care label, such as hand-knitted wool mittens and hats. The fabric moves freely there, and there is no smooth label to attach them to. For such garments, an iron-on label that is heat-applied directly to the fabric is a better solution. Lappu does not sell iron-on labels, but we are saying it plainly so that you can choose the right solution.

How much does it cost?

A set of 124 self-adhesive name labels costs from SEK 139, approximately SEK 1.12 per label. Since the same set works on both clothes and hard items, it goes a long way for a whole child's wardrobe and accompanying belongings. Free shipping when buying two products, and the labels are printed in the EU.

Frequently asked questions about self-adhesive name labels

Do I need an iron?

No. Self-adhesive name labels are peeled off and pressed on by hand. No iron or sewing is needed.

Where do I put the label on clothes?

On the sewn-in care label. That's where a self-adhesive name label stays on most securely through washing. Avoid attaching it directly to the fabric, which moves and can cause the label to come off.

Which surfaces do they stick to?

Fabric, plastic, metal, glass, and leather. One set therefore works for clothes, shoes, lunch boxes, bottles, and sports equipment.

Are they washable?

Yes. The labels withstand 60°C in the washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher. Wait 24 hours after applying them before the first wash.

How long do they stay on?

With proper placement and 24 hours of curing, they normally last an entire school year or longer. Several customers report that last year's labels are still in place.

Can I remove them again?

On smooth surfaces, the label can usually be removed carefully with minimal adhesive residue. On care labels, a thin layer of adhesive may remain and can be rolled off with a finger.

Do they work on hand-knitted garments without a care label?

Worse. Without a smooth label to attach to, the fabric moves too much. For completely hand-knitted garments, an iron-on label is a better fit. Lappu only sells self-adhesive labels and is transparent about it.

How many labels will I get and how much do they cost?

One set contains 124 labels and costs from SEK 139, approximately SEK 1.12 per label.

Are they safe for children?

The labels are printed in the EU and made for use on children's clothes and belongings.
